DAY 43: JOHN
“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)
Dear Christian,
Jesus tells us that he satisfies every hunger and thirst.
That is an extremely bold statement to make. And Jesus knew this. Even Jesus’s own disciples said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” And at that moment, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.
At that moment, the trilemma that C.S. Lewis coined comes into effect. Only a liar pretending to be God, a lunatic with divine delusions, or the Lord of the the universe Himself could say such a thing. When Jesus said, “I am the bread of life,” He is essentially saying that we need to depend on Him in the same way that we depend on food and water.
This is a hard pill for many of us to swallow because we pride ourselves of our independence. Of our ability to work our way up. Our ability to do things ourselves. But the path of a Christian is one of surrender — understanding and acknowledging that our sin is great, but our Savior is even greater.
So we trust, not in ourselves or anything that we do, but in Christ alone as our only hope in life and in death.
Love,
Patsy
