DAY 1: GENESIS
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3)
Dear Christian,
In a world that was empty, void, and covered in darkness, God spoke light into existence. I marvel at this simple phrase and how God’s words carry power, weight, truth, and hope. It reminds me of the power of God’s words in scripture and how even today God’s word is not dead, but very much alive. Alive in its encouragements and promises, alive in its teachings and admonishments, and alive in transforming hearts, minds, and souls.
This phrase also makes me think of Jesus, the Word who became flesh, who said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).
Jesus then turns to us and gives us an identity statement as his followers. He said, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
The Lord is the giver of light. He is able to transform darkness into light. Not just in our world, but also in us. When all is lost, dark, and scary, let us put our hope in the Lord.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Love,
Patsy
